The third sector currently enjoys widespread public and political support.
Businesses in this sector are established primarily with social or
environmental objectives and their surpluses are principally reinvested
for that same purpose in the business or in the community, rather than
being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.
The judges are looking for third sector businesses (charities, social
enterprises, other not-for-profit organisations, etc) driven by social
and environmental aims that have set clear objectives, met or exceeded
expectations and forecasts, demonstrated tangible evidence of success
and have a clear and compelling vision for the future.
The Eden Project is wholly
owned by the Eden Trust, an educational charity. They use exhibits,
events, workshops and educational programmes to remind people what
nature gives to us and to help people to learn how to look after it in
return. They welcome over a million people every year to join in with
their events and learn from their exhibits. All money raised goes to
further the aims of the Trust.
